Topical Microbicides

In the absence of an effective vaccine for the inhibition of transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the development of safe and effective topical microbicides remains the most logical means to suppress the transmission of HIV and STIs in the world. Although the primary rationale for the expedited development of topical microbicides is based on the rapidly increasing rates of heterosexual transmission among women in developing countries, topical microbicide development will ultimately benefit men and women throughout the world by providing effective means to suppress or eliminate the sexual transmission of infectious organisms. Our programs are specifically targeting the inhibition of transmission of HIV and other STIs through the use of highly novel single agents and combination therapy strategies employing compounds which target multiple stages in virus replication which occur prior to infection of target cells in the vagina or rectum. ImQuest Life Sciences is also developing compounds with activity against multiple STIs.
